Tuition hike: 50% of students may drop out in two years – ASUU

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, has raised the alarm over the looming 40 to 50 per cent of students whom he predicts may drop out of school within the next two years if the Federal Government fails to stop the continuous fee hike in the universities.

Osodeke made this known while speaking on the current situation in the Nigerian education sector on Channels TV on Sunday night.

According to him, the heavy fees being imposed on students across the nation would result in a massive dropout of students, due to their inability to cope with the payments.

He said, “If nothing is done about these heavy fees being introduced by schools all over the country, in the next two or three years, more than 40 to 50 per cent of these children who are in school today will drop out.”

The petitioners, Jandor who was the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 18 election, and the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, had yet to arrive in court at the commencement of the proceeding.

Nyesom Wike approves 3-month grace for owners of underdeveloped land

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has given owners of underdeveloped plots of land in the FCT three-month grace period to begin to develop them or get their allocation papers revoked.

The Director of Information and Communication at the FCT Administration, Mr Muhammad Sule, stated on Sunday in Abuja that the affected titled holders had obtained building plan approvals, but were yet to develop the properties.

He stated that the affected property owners were expected to develop the property within the stipulated period or have their title documents revoked in line with extant laws.

The grace period, he explained, applied to individuals and to corporate organisations that had showed the desire to develop their property by obtaining building plan approvals.

NLC, TUC to embark on Indefinite strike from October 3

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has declared an indefinite strike, which will commence on Tuesday, October 3.

This followed a joint press briefing held by both leadership of the union in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Tuesday (today).

According to the notice of meeting signed by the NLC Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, the meeting is holding virtually.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong has appealed to the NLC leadership to shelve the planned strike, assuring them that the Federal Government is determined to address the concerns raised.

The minister also noted that one of the major demands of the NLC in their last meeting has been met, which has to do with the release of the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport workers.

Indefinite strike: Afenifere pleads to FG to avert NLC strike

Following NLC and TUC decision to embark on an indefinite strike starting from Tuesday, October 3, Afenifere, has called on the Federal Government to find solutions to the economic crisis the country is facing.

This was contained in a communique issued after the meeting of the group held at the residence of its acting National Leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, on Tuesday.

The Yoruba socio-political organisation, also urged the government to listen to the demands of the Nigerian Labour Congress to avoid the planned industrial action.

The Afenifere noted that in reacting and calling for mass action on the subsidy removal, the NLC was living to its historic responsibility. It also urged the government to reduce the cost of governance in the interest of the nation.

Nigeria loses AFCON 2027 hosting right bid

Nigeria has lost the joint bid with the Benin Republic to host the African Cup of Nations in 2027, as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are named joint hosts of the 2027 tournament.

This comes after the Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh arrived in Egypt on Tuesday with representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation to bid to host AFCON in 2027.

Morocco last hosted the AFCON in 1988 and was chosen in 2015 but asked for the tournament to be postponed because of the Ebola virus, although CAF later decided to strip the north African nation of the hosting rights.

While Morocco were hot favourites to host the 2025 edition of the premier African sport event, the shock last-minute withdrawal of Algeria from the 2027 race on Tuesday threw it wide open.

The Kenya-Uganda-Tanzania bid then got the nod from the CAF executive committee, taking the biennial tournament back to east Africa for the first time since Ethiopia staged the 1976 finals.
