The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has reopened Runway 18L/36R at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The runway had been temporarily closed on Tuesday due to a Dana Air plane that had skidded off it.
This was made known on Wednesday in a press release that FAAN’s Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, signed.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria is delighted to inform the general public and all stakeholders that Runway 18L/36R was reopened for flight operations at 19:58 hours, according to the statement.
This incident comes after the runway was previously closed this morning owing to a Dana Air aircraft, registration number 5N-BKI, that overshot the runway during its landing maneuver.
Our emergency response team moved quickly to evacuate the aircraft from the area and retrieve it. Orah continued, “extensive clearing operations were then carried out to guarantee the runway was clear of any Foreign Object Debris that could compromise flight safety.”
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency and the FAAN Operations Division jointly evaluated the runway surface and determined it safe for operations to resume, according to the statement.
FAAN confirmed that the area affected by the overshoot was significantly muddy, necessitating extensive cleaning efforts to restore safety.
“To enable the prompt resumption of operations on Runway 18L/36R, a concerted effort was made for the comprehensive and effective cleaning of the area,” she stated.
“Ensuring the safety and security of our passengers, staff, and airport operations remains our top priority,” Orah said in an apology for any inconvenience caused.
