Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has urged men to embrace polygamy, citing his upbringing in a polygamous family and crediting it as central to his personal and professional success.

A video footage of Afolayan’s statements went viral when he said them during a watch party for his most recent movie, Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens. The filmmaker revealed in the video that he is presently pursuing a divorce, claiming that this has reinforced his opinions on polygamy.

“I am in and out of court seeking a divorce. I don’t mind the toll. So I can marry many wives now,” he said.

The award-winning director explicitly attributed his existence and accomplishments to his late father’s polygamous lifestyle being the seventh child of a man who had ten wives.

“Without my father, there wouldn’t be a KAP Village or even Kunle Afolayan. I am the seventh child of my father because he had ten wives,” he said.

Encouraging men to embrace polygamy, Afolayan added, “For the men, marry many women, or rather be involved with many women. You know why? If my father didn’t, he would not have born me, and that is the honest truth. But today, a few of us are lifting his legacy.”

He further reflected on life and legacy, saying, “Life is short, death is constant. Nobody has life forever. Everybody has a period. Use your period.”

Recall that Afolayan publicly opposed polygamy in a 2021 interview, citing the difficulties it caused in his family.

At the time, he disclosed that his father had twenty-five children and that language and cultural barriers made it hard for the family to unite.
