Residents are advised by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to keep a safe distance from live electrical wires and to refrain from touching anyone who comes into contact with electricity.

NERC stressed that electricity is very dangerous and that trying to save someone without taking the right safeguards could cause further injuries or fatalities in a public statement posted on its X account on Monday.

The advisory cautioned: “Safety first: Don’t Become the Next Victim! Electricity is powerful, but it doesn’t play favorites. If you see a live wire down or witness someone getting shocked, your first instinct might be to jump in. Stop right there! Touching a victim with your bare hands or trying to pull them away can send the current straight through you, too.”

NERC outlined critical safety measures: Hands off: Never touch a live wire or a victim directly, sstand back: Maintain a safe distance and ensure others do the same, and call the Professionals: Immediately notify your nearest electricity distribution company (DisCo) or emergency services.

The commission called on residents to exercise caution and refrain from intervening in electrical emergencies, stressing that only trained personnel should handle electrical emergencies. It noted that adhering to safety guidelines can help save lives and prevent further accidents.

The advisory forms part of the ongoing efforts by Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to educate communities about electrical safety and curb accidents linked to fallen power lines or other electrical hazards. Residents are also encouraged to spread the message within their communities to help safeguard lives and property.
