A convicted prisoner who escaped the scene of a traffic accident while being carried from Potiskum to Damaturu has been listed as sought by the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Yobe State command.
Abdullahi Adamu, the command’s public relations officer, revealed this in a formal announcement on Wednesday.
The notification stated, “The Nigerian Correctional Service Yobe State command has confirmed the escape of an inmate from the Medium Security Custodial Center, Potiskum.”
It stated that the escape occurred on April 13 after a car carrying prisoners from the facility to Damaturu was involved in an automobile accident.
“Unfortunately, the incident happened while the accident victims were being rescued. The person was able to escape the accident scene”, it continued.
Through Tarmuwa, the escaped prisoner was recognised as 30-year-old Dahiru Mohammed of Askiwari village.
He was taken into custody on November 29, 2024, and his prison number is J/1539/24.
Mohammed was considered to be dangerous by the command, which advised the public to stay away from him completely.
The statement cautioned that “the escaped individual is considered dangerous and members of the public are advised not to have any personal dealings with him.”
It urged anyone with pertinent information to take immediate action.
The statement said, “Please take immediate action: report to the nearest police station or correctional facility if you have any information regarding the whereabouts of this individual or if you spotted anyone suspicious near the site of the accident on the Potiskum-Damaturu road.”
The command’s emergency numbers are 07038397460, 07063348987, 08062211873 for the MSCC Potiskum Duty Office, and 08038452982 for the Yobe State Command headquarters.
Additionally, the command advised people not to protect the fugitive.
“Harbouring a fugitive is a serious crime that carries legal penalties”, he said. We appreciate the public’s support in facilitating the inmate’s prompt return to prison.
