On Sunday, the Abia State Police Command announced that it had detained policemen implicated in a widely shared social media video that reportedly showed police wrongdoing in Uturu, Abia State.

The command stated that an investigation was started right away after the event in a statement issued by DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa.

The statement stated, “The complainant was contacted, and the officers involved were identified, traced, and promptly arrested.”

It further stated that the State Criminal Investigation Department had been instructed by the Commissioner of Police to look into the officers in order to take the necessary administrative measures.

The public was reassured by the command that they will receive updates regarding the investigation’s findings.

Additionally, the commissioner reaffirmed the command’s dedication to professionalism, discipline, and civility when interacting with the public while performing legal duties.

In keeping with the Inspector-General of Police’s responsibility to guarantee a police force that is amiable and consistent with human rights norms, he issued a warning that “impunity and all forms of misconduct will not be tolerated.”

A police officer at a checkpoint was shown asking a commuter why he had three cell phones in the widely shared footage from Umuahia.

The commuter, who was filming the interaction, questioned the officer about his lack of a name tag, claiming he was unable to identify him. When another cop objected to being filmed, the first officer said, “Make you record am,” in pidgin. I have no fear.

The officer allegedly responded, “Oya, call am,” to the commuter’s threat to call the Inspector-General of Police before a fight broke out.
