A catastrophe was prevented in the early hours of Thursday when a tanker filled with gas ignited on Abaranje Road in the Ikotun region of Lagos State.
Olawale Afolabi, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, revealed in a statement on Thursday that the event took place at Ola Farm Bus Stop and was quickly managed by emergency responders, with no casualties or injuries reported.
Afolabi mentioned that the agency’s response team arrived to discover the tanker in flames, stating that initial findings indicated the tanker was moving at high speed when it hit a road bump, resulting in the driver losing control.
“Preliminary results suggest that the vehicle was moving quickly when it collided with a speed bump.”
“The collision made the driver lose control, resulting in a tyre explosion and an instant fire ignition,” the statement indicated.
Afolabi mentioned that LASEMA personnel collaborated with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to put out the fire, secure the vicinity, and stop the flames from reaching adjacent homes, businesses, and other road users.
He stated that personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and police officers from the Ikotun Division oversaw traffic and crowd management during the entire operation.
“We are thankful to share that there were no fatalities, and no injuries were reported.” “The situation has been managed, and the fire has been completely put out,” he remarked.
The spokesperson mentioned that work was underway to clear the charred tanker from the roadway, noting that heavy machinery had been dispatched to eliminate the vehicle and resume typical traffic movement.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, urged drivers to adhere to speed limits, particularly near speed bumps and in residential neighborhoods.
“We take this chance to urge all drivers to recognize the significance of following speed limits, especially in areas with designated bumps and within residential streets.” “Such carefulness preserves lives and safeguards property,” he stated.
He reiterated the agency’s dedication to disaster readiness, swift emergency action, and public safety throughout Lagos State, while praising all responding agencies and citizens for their collaboration during the operation.
Oke-Osanyintolu encouraged the public to report emergencies quickly via the state’s toll-free lines 112 and 767.
It was stated on Monday that an electrical surge from a prepaid meter caused a fire that destroyed the upper floor of a three-storey residential structure in Ketu-Ikosi, Lagos, resulting in two firefighters being hospitalized after they collapsed while attempting the rescue.
