The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday honored his late predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu, on what would have been Akeredolu’s 70th birthday, calling him a leader, mentor, and brave statesman whose legacy still influences the state.
Aiyedatiwa reiterated his government’s dedication to enhancing the groundwork established by the late governor and upholding his vision for a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Ondo State.
The governor expressed this in a message released on Tuesday to honor Akeredolu’s posthumous birthday anniversary.
Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and past President of the Nigerian Bar Association, was governor of Ondo State from February 2017 until his passing on December 27, 2023, following a lengthy illness.
He gained significant recognition for promoting genuine federalism, his involvement in founding the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, and his efforts for infrastructure advancement and enhanced security within the state.
Aiyedatiwa, who was deputy governor under Akeredolu before taking over after his passing, stated that the late governor’s bravery, determination, and commitment to public service continue to inspire.
He remarked, “Today, I stand with the Akeredolu family, the citizens of Ondo State, and numerous well-wishers throughout Nigeria in honoring the life and legacy of my leader, mentor, and former predecessor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, on the occasion of his 70th birthday.”
“Although he is not here anymore, the principles he stood for, his bravery, determination, and steadfast dedication to the advancement of Ondo State, keep motivating us.”
“He was a man who acted with remarkable courage, upheld justice unwaveringly, and committed himself to serving our beloved state and country.”
In contemplating his bond with the deceased governor, Aiyedatiwa conveyed gratitude for the chance to collaborate closely with him.
He stated, “I am deeply thankful for the chance to have worked beside him.” His trust in me, his mentorship, and the duties he delegated to me serve as lasting lessons that still influence my perspective on leadership and public service.
The governor committed to upholding Akeredolu’s vision for the state, stating, “As we commemorate his legacy today, I reiterate my dedication to enhancing the groundwork he established and to maintaining the vision of a safer, more robust, and prosperous Ondo State for the welfare of all our citizens.”
He also prayed for the late governor’s soul to find peace and for his family to receive comfort.
Aiyedatiwa remarked, “On this 70th posthumous birthday anniversary, I pray that the Almighty grants him everlasting peace and provides solace to his family and all who hold his memory dear.”
