Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes engaged in discussions to clear the air after Manchester United’s 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, which resulted in the club captain staying on the bench throughout the match.
The meeting is said to have occurred at United’s Carrington training facility on Tuesday, with both individuals believed to be eager to move past recent conflicts and concentrate on enhancing the team’s performance.
Fabrizio Romano reported on X on Wednesday that the talks were fruitful, with Carrick and Fernandes dedicated to progressing despite increasing pressure regarding United’s performances.
His post stated: “Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes had a direct conversation to resolve issues after the Portuguese star was sidelined for the entire match against Bournemouth. Bruno is anticipated to play against Chelsea on Saturday.”
The progress comes after Fernandes’ outspoken critique of the team’s strategies following the midweek 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.
Fernandes challenged the coaching team’s choice to forgo man-to-man pressing, contending that this strategy permitted Como to take advantage of gaps and build confidence throughout the game.
The midfielder emphasized the importance of United demonstrating more courage when facing pressure during games.
His remarks faced additional criticism after Carrick excluded him from the starting lineup for the Bournemouth match and opted not to bring him on as a substitute, even with United falling behind.
In Fernandes‘ absence, Harry Maguire donned the captain‘s armband.
United’s recent performances have heightened examination of Carrick, whose team has faced an eight-match winless streak in all competitions. The 3-0 loss to Bournemouth came after a troubling 4-1 defeat to Como, heightening tension surrounding the manager’s role.
Fernandes’ comeback to the team could offer a possible advantage for United before their trip to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31.
The Portugal international has been a crucial creative player for the club, and his participation could be vital as United strive to enhance their performances and alleviate pressure on Carrick.
Still, although the discussions indicated that both sides are ready to advance, United must show improvement on the field as they get ready for a tough away game against Chelsea.
