The Federal Government has congratulated Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele on the record-breaking performance of her latest movie, Behind the Scenes, at the box office.
In a statement posted on its X handle on Monday, the National Orientation Agency hailed Akindele’s achievement as a significant boost for Nigeria’s creative industry and a testament to the increasing global recognition of Nigerian stories.
According to the agency, “Behind the Scenes has officially crossed ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office, making history as the first Nollywood film ever to hit the ₦2 billion mark.
“The flex did not stop at home; the movie also showed modest global muscle, raking in over $111,256 in Canada and an impressive $190,249 across North America.
“From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theaters overseas — this movie had everyone locked in.”
The NOA highlighted that the movie’s success marks Akindele’s feat as the first filmmaker to top the African box office for three consecutive years.
The agency added that the success of Behind the Scenes showcases the growing reach of Nigeria’s film industry and reinforces the global appeal of Nollywood productions, describing the milestone as a proud moment for the country’s cultural and creative sectors.
The government’s recognition comes amid widespread acclaim for the 2025 release, which has not only dominated local markets but also highlighted Nollywood’s growing international presence.
Reports on Jan. 12 noted that Akindele cemented her place in African cinema history as Behind the Scenes surpassed the ₦2 billion mark at the box office, becoming the first Nollywood film to reach this milestone.
