At least 17 shops were devastated by an early morning blaze that ravaged Sabo Market in the Ikorodu region of Lagos State on Tuesday.
Olawale Afolabi, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, stated in a report that the fire started around 1:10 a.m. and was effectively controlled before it reached other parts of the market.
Afolabi reported that initial inquiries suggested the fire started in one of the shops and then extended to nearby stalls.
“The direct cause is believed to be an electrical surge, since the incident allegedly happened while the power supply was operational,” the agency stated.
He remarked that emergency personnel from LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service quickly began firefighting efforts, stopping the fire from turning into a bigger catastrophe.
He stated that a post-incident evaluation revealed that 17 out of the 32 shops in the impacted area of the market were harmed, resulting in the destruction of provisions, groceries, food items, and other goods.
