In an unsuccessful effort to rob three banks in Labone, Accra, the Ghana Police Service killed two people and detained a suspected member of a robbery network.
Augustine Maazi was named as the detained suspect.
In a statement released on its X account on Thursday, the police revealed this.
The statement claims that on August 13, 2026, at around 10:45 a.m., the police received information that a gang was getting ready to assault the Labone-based GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank.
When the gang members were seen in their cars parked near the banks in Labone, a police squad was sent there right away.
One of the vehicles tried to flee by speeding off when it saw the police.
After pursuing them, the cops detained suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi. However, the other person was able to get away.
Amid gunfire, the robbers in the second car also attempted to flee.
According to the statement, “the police engaged them in a shoot out resulting in the deaths of two suspects.”
A blow gun and two cars, a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17, were found, according to the police.
The statement continued, “The bodies of the deceased suspects have been placed at the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy, while suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi is in custody assisting the investigation.”
The response squad was praised by the Ghana Police Service for preventing the intended robbery attempt.
The public was urged to keep disseminating reliable information on illegal activity.
