Dr Ibrahim Tahir, a medical doctor who was kidnapped, has regained his freedom following the payment of N50 million ransom by his family.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 2, 2026, when Dr Tahir and his younger brother were abducted at their residence on City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi.
Sadly, the body of the younger brother was discovered near Orley River, along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, on January 5.
He is suspected to have been killed by the abductors.
The father disclosed on Thursday that payment of the ransom was in two parts, N20 million and N30 million, which preceded his son’s release on Wednesday at about 8:00pm.
He explained that the ransom was raised through the combined efforts of the family, supports from non-governmental organizations, friends and other well-wishers.
The father disclosed that Dr Tahir suffered a leg injury in the course of the ordeal, and that one of the abductors sustained gunshot injuries during an ambush by vigilantes and hunters before the doctor’s release.
He said, “My son has been released by the kidnappers after we paid N50 million. I feel good that he is free, but I have also lost another son.
“The family, organizations, friends, and well-wishers contributed the N50 million ransom. My son was grazed by a bullet, but he is receiving treatment at a hospital.”
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, verified the release of the victim on Thursday.
When contacted via a telephone call, she said, “I can confirm to you that the doctor has been released.”
