A bandit attack along the Gummi–Sokoto Road resulted in one fatality, while the Zamfara State Police Command rescued 11 kidnapped travellers.
The command revealed that the assault took place around 10:30am on Tuesday when alleged bandits attacked a truck transporting vegetables and people.
A statement from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Yazid Abubakar, revealed that the assailants shot at the vehicle, resulting in the driver losing control and swerving off the road.
Authorities reported that one of the travelers, named Dan Fati Umar from Gidan Ganja in the Bukuyum Local Government Area, was fatally injured in the assault, while another suffered significant injuries and is currently undergoing medical care.
The report stated,“On July 21, 2026, around 10:30 a.m., a significant group of armed robbers attacked a truck carrying vegetables and additional passengers on the Gummi–Sokoto Road.
Amidst the assault, the attackers shot at the car, resulting in the driver losing control and swerving off the roadway.
Unfortunately, one individual, named Dan Fati Umar, male, from Gidan Ganja through Bukuyum, died in the incident, while another person suffered severe injuries and is undergoing medical care.
The outlaws kidnapped an unknown number of travelers.
Nonetheless, after a rapid reaction from police officers and additional security forces, 11 abducted individuals were successfully freed.
The saved victims have now been brought back together with their families.”
The Police Commissioner, Ahmad Muhammad Bello, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and hoped for a rapid recovery for the injured victim.
He also guaranteed residents that the command is dedicated to safeguarding lives and property and encouraged the public to keep supplying reliable information to security agencies to aid ongoing efforts.
The most recent rescue occurred during heightened military actions against terrorists throughout the North-West.
It was reported on Tuesday that soldiers from Operation FANSAN YAMMA saved three abducted individuals in the Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State after they fled from a terrorist lair during a downpour while their captors were asleep.
The military reported that the victims were kidnapped on July 14 while farming in the Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State and have since been returned to the relevant authorities for reunification with their families.
The task force revealed that soldiers stopped a vehicle carrying 10 motorcycles believed to be intended for terrorist groups during a search operation in Kebbi State.
