Daystar Christian Centre Senior Pastor, Sam Adeyemi has bemoaned the lack of compassion and empathy among some Nigerian politicians, claiming that they have lost touch of the struggles faced by poor citizens.
Adeyemi blasted political leaders on Thursday for prioritising power retention over enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily show.
“The fear of losing power drives many leaders to defect between political parties,” he said. “Some have clearly lost touch with the plight of the poor; they lack empathy and compassion.”
Adeyemi advocated for an environment that enables leaders to make smart decisions and guide the nation in the correct way.
He further argued that the Nigerian political landscape is dominated by “godfathers” who control who attains power, rather than the people themselves.
“This system breeds leaders who become corrupt and forget the people they are meant to serve,” he added.
Adeyemi emphasised the value of national unity by quoting former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an example of a leader who opposed ethnic politics.
He also recalled how an expatriate expressed concern over speculations within the Presidential Villa blaming Northerners for national difficulties, stressing that such division are detrimental for the country.
Adeyemi closed by urging Nigerian leaders to get back in touch with the populace and put the country’s progress ahead of their own survival.
