A couple has been detained by the Rivers State Police Command for reportedly locking their 15-year-old housekeeper, known only as Amaechi, in a restroom at their home in Abuloma, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.
On Monday, September 14, the adolescent, who is from Ebonyi State, was reportedly saved by Abuloma Police Division officers after the landlord sounded the alarm due to her extended absence.
The youngster was allegedly trapped in the restroom for weeks by the pair, whose identities were withheld, for an unspecified infraction.
Our correspondent was informed by a source that the adolescent was supposedly served leftover food once a day while in detention, despite her repeated requests for her release.
According to a different report, the cops intervened after neighbors noticed the girl’s cries and sounded the alarm.
In a phone contact with our correspondent on Tuesday, Blessing Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police and spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the occurrence and stated that the girl was saved as a result of the landlord’s observation.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident,” Agabe stated.
The girl had not been leaving the house for a while, and the landlord noticed this. He told the cops that he had a suspicion.
The girl was imprisoned in the toilet of the residence when our men arrived and saved her. She worked as a housekeeper. We have made arrangements for the girl’s family to visit the station.
“She was living with a husband and couple who worked as housekeepers, but they have been detained. They are with us, and the investigation is still in progress.
The adolescent will not be brought back to the home where she was purportedly detained, the police official continued.
“The girl won’t go back to the house where she was picked up, so we asked her family to come to the station,” she stated.
Agabe responded, “Well, for now, investigation is ongoing,” when asked if the pair would be charged.
