Following the death of three students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, at the Sunshine Castle hostel, Ihiagwa, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka, has urged heads of tertiary institutions to end drug abuse and cultism such institutions.

The FUTO students died after a sex romp in the hostel after allegedly taking tramadol and Indian hemp.

The minister, who spoke in Owerri, said the heads of institutions of higher learning must work hard to ensure that drug abuse, cultism and all forms of indiscipline were curbed in tertiary institutions.

He said the alleged abuse of drugs by the affected students was not a good one for FUTO, considering its long standing record of academic excellence.

“Vice-chancellors must stamp out drug abuse, cultism and all forms of indiscipline from universities. The abuse of drugs by some students of FUTO is not a good one at all, but I am pleased that the university management is doing something about it,” Anwuka said.

The minister urged parents and guardians to dissuade their children from engaging in any illicit act that was capable of destroying their destinies.

Anwuka said, “I have been informed that the management of FUTO has been steadfast in maintaining discipline by both the staff and students.

“No institution excels in the midst of poor commitment to work and flagrant breach of the rules and regulations governing the conduct of staff and students.”

The minister said President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was committed to improving the education system in the country.
