Less than an hour after attending their senior colleagues’ induction ceremony, two 500-level and one 400-level medical students from Abia State University Uturu, ABSU, have died in an automobile accident.

The mishap happened on Thursday night near the Enugu Port Harcourt Expressway, Nunya axis. After attending the induction ceremony at the university’s main campus in Uturu, they were on their way to their base in Aba.

Two other persons in the car with them sustained injuries. The injured person were taken to the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, FMC, where they got the necessary treatment before being discharged.

The incidence was confirmed by the university’s public relations officer, Mr. Chijioke Nwogu.

The State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Ngozi Okoronkwo described the situation as a tragic one.

She claimed to have seen the injured students in the hospital. She said that their injuries were reportedly not very severe, so they had received treatment and been discharged.

The Abia Commissioner stated that she was informed that the students were driving a Toyota Camry when a tyre busted. Most likely, the driver lost control and collided with a tree beside the road.

Two of the victims were believed to have lost their lives on the scene, the third victim died shortly after being carried to the hospital.
