The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would be on the ballot in the 2027 general elections, according to Oyo State Governor Engineer Seyi Makinde, who met with PDP stakeholders from all 33 local government areas on Monday night.
Additionally, it was decided that in certain locations where a rotating policy has been implemented, the party will choose consensus candidates.
It was also decided that certain provincial and federal lawmakers serving two terms would receive automatic tickets in specific districts.
The stakeholders’ meeting has put an end to the rumors that the party’s leadership and members would defect to another party before the general elections in 2027.
Governor Makinde confirmed this development, saying he is still at ease and dedicated to the party.
The governor was quoted as saying, “Those saying PDP will die are mistaken. What is certain is that PDP will be on the ballot in 2027, and we will produce candidates for all elective positions from the state to the national level. We will remain in PDP and win.”
Before the elections, Makinde called on all parties involved to unite and implement consensus-building tactics.
He instructed party leaders from all zones to call meetings with the goal of settling disputes and reaching a consensus on workable solutions.
“They want to take Oyo State at all costs, but it is our responsibility to ensure we bend our rules where necessary to accommodate one another,” he said.
As a result, the governor declared that first-term members of the State House of Assembly and members of the National Assembly would receive automatic tickets.
He made it clear that first-term state Assembly members would receive automatic tickets, and that returning members would also be given consideration in accordance with current agreements, such as rotating arrangements.
“There are places where individuals have chosen not to return, and in some cases, second-term lawmakers may seek a third term. We are preparing for a tough electoral contest, but we are confident of victory.
“This battle is not just about 2027; it is about the future of democracy and future generations. Nothing good comes easy. Success is achieved through struggle. Can we fight through this? Yes. Can we win? Absolutely,” he declared.
Makinde put an end to rumors about potential defections or other platforms by assuring party supporters that all candidates running for office in 2027 would run under the PDP.
He went on to say that the party would choose its candidates by consensus, stressing the need of unity and internal cohesiveness in maintaining the PDP’s hegemony in the state.
