Four persons have been confirmed dead following a late-night road crash that occurred around 11 p.m. on Monday at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway in Ogun State.
The collision, which was caused by speeding, included a blue MAN Diesel truck owned by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BDJ 482 XC.
This was made known in a statement provided to journalists on Tuesday by Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, the Ogun State Federal Road Safety Corps spokesperson.
Odunsi-Oyewole claims that the collision happened on Monday at around 11:16 p.m.
She said, “A white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BDJ482XC collided with a blue MAN Diesel truck with registration number RSH969XC belonging to Julius Berger. The incident occurred at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway.
Regrettably, all four occupants of the bus—two male adults and two female adults—sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene. No survivors or other injuries were recorded.”
According to Odunsi-Oyewole, preliminary investigations showed that speeding was the cause of the collision.
She stated that the truck was in the process of being towed when the towing chain suddenly snapped, causing the vehicle to become immobile on the roadway.
“The speeding Toyota Hiace bus subsequently rammed into the stationary truck. Following the collision, the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, leaving the truck behind,” she added.
Rescue personnel responded to the emergency call within eight minutes, according to the FRSC spokesperson.
She further mentioned that the victims’ remains had been removed and placed in the State Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode.
According to Odunsi-Oyewole, the vehicles involved in the collision were seized by Nigeria Police Force officials from the Imushin Division, who also started an investigation.
In the meantime, Akinwunmi Fasakin, the FRSC’s Ogun State Sector Commander, advised drivers to closely follow speed restrictions, especially at night, and make sure that towing equipment complies with safety regulations in order to avert preventable deaths.
