Oforbuike Damian, a 30-year-old male, was charged with killing his mother by stabbing before a Magistrate’s Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
A one-count charge that was close to murder was docked to the defendant.
The crime was committed on March 19, 2026, at Ohatekwe village in the Ukawu community, Onicha Local Government Area of the state, according to Police Prosecutor David Njoku, a Senior State Counsel.
Njoku claimed that the defendant killed his mother, Mrs. Onyema Damian, by stabbing her in the back with a knife.
According to him, the crime is punishable by Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State, 2009.
The defendant, who did not have legal representation, informed the court that he killed his mother because she refused to give him a bath.
“I don’t know what really happened, but I remember killing her because she refused to bathe me,” he said.
Noting that the court lacked authority to consider the case, Chief Magistrate Chinedu Agama ordered the defendant to be remanded in a detention facility.
He also ordered the Department of Public Prosecutions to receive the case file and materials for legal counsel.
The case was postponed to April 9, 2026.
