Gbenga Hashim, a former presidential candidate and prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has initiated a N22 million water intervention project in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by commissioning a solar-powered borehole in New Jerusalem, a densely populated community in Bwari Area Council.
Hashim stated during the commissioning ceremony that the project, carried out by the Gbenga Hashim Foundation, was intended to alleviate the area’s ongoing water scarcity. He pointed out that every community should have access to clean, safe water since it is still a fundamental need.
He revealed that the New Jerusalem project, which cost N5.6 million to construct, is a component of a larger N22 million intervention that covers comparable initiatives in each of the FCT’s six area councils. He claims that attempts are already being made to duplicate the program in other marginalized areas.
Hashim underlined that the foundation’s efforts are motivated by a dedication to enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians who are at risk, especially those who live in underdeveloped rural and peri-urban areas.
He also disclosed plans to broaden the reach of his humanitarian endeavors outside of the Federal Capital Territory, stating that the foundation would shortly start outreach initiatives throughout Northern States. He stated that the program would focus on vulnerable groups, particularly those impacted by displacement and insecurity.
Using the occasion, the PDP stalwart urged New Jerusalem residents to take responsibility for the facility and make sure it is used and maintained properly for the benefit of current and future generations.
He also bemoaned the fact that many areas nationwide still lack access to necessities like portable water, good roads, and healthcare services, citing years of neglect by successive governments.
Hashim highlighted the foundation’s prior initiatives, stating that it has carried out a number of projects across the country, such as building asphalt roads, offering educational assistance, and funding young ICT training programs.
He went on to say that one of the recipients of the foundation’s training initiatives went on to become one of Nigeria’s youngest female state lawmakers, citing this as evidence of the benefits of consistent investment in the development of human capital.
The FCT Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Ismail Mohammed Dogara, the Chairman of the party in Bwari Area Council, the Ward Councillor, ten Ward Chairmen and other party stakeholders, community leaders, and locals who witnessed the commissioning were among the dignitaries present.
Community members expressed gratitude for the initiative, pointing out that it will greatly lessen the impact of water scarcity and enhance public health and sanitation.
