Three persons have been confirmed dead, while 11 persons were injured when a commercial bus plunged into Ogun River, otherwise known as Ososa River, on the Ijebu-Ode/Sagamu Expressway in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

The accident, which involved a yellow Mazda E220 commercial bus, occurred on Thursday at 10:32 am reportedly due to alleged mechanical fault.

The Ogun State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corp, Clement Oladele, confirmed the incident.

Oladele in a statement said, “A total of 14 people comprising five male adults and nine female adults were involved in the fatal crash.

“The people injured were 11, comprising five males and six females.

“A total of three people died in the crash made up of one male and two females.”

The FRSC boss further explained that the accident was a lone crash.

According to him, the bus took off from Ijebu-Ode motor park and headed to Lagos, but the driver lost control and plunged into the River in Ijebu-Ode.

“The suspected cause of the crash is mechanical deficiency.

“The injured victims were rescued to the General Hospital Ijebu-Ode, while corpses were deposited at the same Ijebu-Ode General Hospital Mortuary,” he added.

He, however, said that efforts were currently on-going as of the time of filing the report to remove the Mazda bus from the river.

Oladele commiserated with the families of the crash victims and advised vehicle operators to put their vehicles in good condition before any trip and be cautious during the rainy season to avoid road traffic crash.
