Suspected cultists attacked the Oreta village in Lagos State’s Ikorodu area and killed two people, including a 22-year-old male named Abdulmalik Bakare, according to reports.
In an interview on Sunday, Tunde Bakare, the deceased’s father, stated that the incident happened on Wednesday.
He claims that six people have been taken into custody in relation to the crime.
“The Divisional Police Officer said he would ensure that the case is thoroughly investigated,” he stated.
There was an unsettling serenity in the community on Sunday when our journalist went.
According to information, the attack came after a trailer driver and a few alleged thugs got into a fight earlier in the day along Gbogbo Road.
Around 8 p.m., armed men on motorbikes rushed the community and opened fire on inhabitants, according to a resident known only as Fasasi, who spoke with our correspondent.
He claims that the crisis started in the afternoon when some young people allegedly stopped a trailer carrying a container and demanded money from the driver.
As stated by him, the driver claimed that several people at a nearby intersection had already received N350,000 from his bosses.
“It began in the afternoon,” he stated. At Gbogbo, some boys stopped the driver of a trailer carrying a container because they wanted to take money from him. The driver claimed to have made payment. Their Chinese owners claimed to have given their supervisors at the intersection N350,000.
However, they declined. One of the local youths who climbed the trailer got stuck under the tire and perished when they were hauling it at the intersection. According to the police, it was an accident and they settled it.
He claimed that several young people organized after the incident and then attacked the neighborhood in retaliation.
“They gathered their gang members and stormed the community on motorcycles during the night,” he continued. They arrived in Oreta and opened fire.
“They killed the boy just as he was going to close his shop.” A child with a physical disability who was eating was also slain. They began smashing glass doors and shattering stores. A fish buyer was also slain.
At the time this article was filed, the identities of the other three victims were not immediately known.
According to the homeowner, the incident sparked terror in the neighborhood, causing many individuals to flee for their lives and suddenly disrupting company operations.
Attempts to get a response from the Lagos State Police Command failed.
As of the time this story was filed, Abimbola Adebisi, the command’s spokeswoman, had not returned calls or texts.
