Officers from the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have initiated an investigation into the discovery of an illegal gun and live ammunition hidden in the residence of Edet George, a resident of Ikot Akpan Afaha Village in the Uyo Local Government Area of the state.
This was revealed in a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, in Uyo on Wednesday.
John stated that agents acting on information carried out a search at the suspect’s home after receiving reports of his regular harassment of the community with a gun.
The statement indicates that a comprehensive search of the property resulted in the recovery of one single-barrel firearm and eight live cartridges hidden inside the home.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has achieved another notable operational success by seizing an unlawfully held firearm and live ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation focused on reducing the spread of illegal weapons and improving public safety throughout the state.
“Based on reliable intelligence, Command operatives executed a focused operation at the home of Edet George, a resident of Ikot Akpan Afaha Village, on 11/7/2026, around 7:00 a.m., after receiving reports that he regularly threatened community members with a gun.”
“A comprehensive inspection of the property resulted in the discovery of one single-barrel firearm and eight live cartridges hidden inside the home,” the statement partially notes.
The police representative stated that initial inquiries have begun to identify the weapon’s origin, assess its legality, and verify if it has been utilized in any criminal activities.
She revealed that throughout the investigation, the suspect’s spouse also confirmed that her husband frequently used the gun to intimidate family members.
The statement also mentioned, “Throughout the investigation, the suspect’s wife (name withheld) provided a statement confirming that the suspect regularly used the firearm to intimidate and threaten both community members and his own family, including her and their children.”
“The seized firearm and ammunition are now in police possession, as initial inquiries continue to identify the weapon’s origin, evaluate its legality, and find out if it has been involved in any criminal activities.”
The statement also mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to addressing the spread of illegal firearms and ensuring that those who unlawfully possess or use weapons to intimidate innocent citizens face justice.
Azare stated that the Command is unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, upholding public order, and continuing intelligence-led operations to enhance safety throughout the state for everyone.
