After the club signed Russian player Anna Minaeva, Ukrainian basketball player Kate Koval departed Louisiana State University’s women’s basketball program. She claimed that the decision was very personal due to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

After the university first claimed that Koval’s departure was due to “personal reasons,” Koval, who was anticipated to play a significant role for LSU this season, confirmed her departure in an Instagram statement on Friday.

“I had every intention of returning to LSU at the end of the previous season to finish my college career. However, I was notified of the plan to sign a Russian player in April, a few days after the transfer window had closed, Koval stated.

The 20-year-old claimed that she was unable to handle the signing as a typical roster decision due to her involvement in the battle.

“My father is a member of the Ukrainian military and takes great satisfaction in protecting his nation from Russian assault.

This battle is neither far away nor abstract to me. Missile strikes have damaged the locations where I grew up and started playing basketball, and Russian attacks have killed and injured people close to me,” she claimed.

According to Koval, Minaeva eventually reevaluated her future at LSU due to the time of her entrance and the effects of the conflict on her family.

“I questioned whether LSU remained the right place for me because of the timing of this situation and the profound personal impact it has had on me, my family, and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war,” she said.

Although she acknowledged that roster choices are a part of college basketball, she insisted that her personal principles have to come first.

Koval remarked, “This decision has not been easy.” “I have to stay loyal to myself, my principles, and my nation even though I recognize and appreciate that roster decisions are a part of college basketball.”

Kim Mulkey, the head coach of LSU, had earlier stated that Koval informed her that she was departing for personal reasons.

“Kate is a wonderful individual. We completely back her in doing what she believes is best for herself. Mulkey remarked, “We all wish her the best.”

Despite the transfer portal’s closing, Koval, who still has two years of college eligibility, is now hoping that the NCAA will permit her to transfer and play somewhere in the 2026–2027 season.

She stated, “I hope the NCAA recognizes the circumstances surrounding my situation and understands the seriousness and deep nature of this matter.”

Koval said she was thankful for her time in Baton Rouge even though she was leaving.

“I felt like I had found a home at LSU, and I am incredibly grateful for my coaches, staff, professors, and the entire LSU community, as well as my teammates who became family,” she remarked.

“I will always treasure the connections, encounters, and memories I had there.”
