At present, there are no discussions for Lionel Messi to go back to his childhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, despite recent claims indicating otherwise.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on X on Friday that Messi is quite content at Inter Miami, and his family shares the same sentiment.
The Argentine star plans to honor his existing contract, which extends at least until the end of 2028.
“There are no discussions occurring regarding Lionel Messi’s comeback to Newell’s Old Boys, contrary to reports.” Messi feels extremely content at Inter Miami, and his family does too. Leo aims to complete his existing contract by 2028, potentially extending further, to be assessed in the future,” Romano shared.
An extended stay is still an option and will be assessed at a later time.
Rumors in Argentine media have surged in the last day, with certain reports suggesting Messi is closer than ever to a return to Rosario, possibly as soon as January 2027.
Newell’s have consistently shown a desire to bring the club’s most renowned youth talent back for a period as he nears the conclusion of his career.
Nonetheless, it seems those reports may have exaggerated the circumstances. Messi is completely dedicated to Inter Miami, where he has adapted well since his arrival in 2023 and has recently prolonged his tenure until 2028.
Although a future return to Newell’s can’t be entirely dismissed later in his career, there are currently no ongoing discussions.
