In the Agility neighborhood of Mile 12, Lagos State, a guy known only as Opeyemi is said to have perished after jumping into a river while being pursued by supposed cultists.
The incident happened on Saturday, September 12, according to a police source.
According to the source, Opeyemi was allegedly pursued by some people when he was on his way to buy something.
The informant said that before he attempted to flee by jumping into the river, the men eventually caught up to him and allegedly attacked him.
“We got a report that he was being chased by some people suspected of being cultists, who caught him and attacked him before he jumped into the river,” a resident stated.
“Those pursuing him stopped some people from trying to save him.”
It was then reported that Opeyemi had drowned.
In a post viewed on Sunday, Naija Confra, an anti-cultism advocacy platform, provided a different version of the occurrence.
According to the site, some locals reported Opeyemi leaped into the river by himself while under the influence of drugs, while others who allegedly saw the event claimed he was attacked and pursued.
