A guy named Moferewa Maiye has been detained by the Department of State Services for reportedly posing as a Service officer and extorting drivers and commuters in Abuja with a fictitious firearm.
It was said on Thursday that Maiye was taken into custody late on Wednesday by DSS agents at his hideout near NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, Abuja, after the Service received reliable information.
The defendant was allegedly carrying a fake weapon and wearing a DSS tactical suit at the time of his detention.
According to a security source, the guy was allegedly extorting money from drivers and passengers by intimidating them with the clothing and firearm.
According to the source, Maiye told detectives that his brother was a DSS officer who passed away a number of years ago. Maiye claimed to be from Agbajojun Village in Kogi State’s Mopamuro Local Government Area.
The source claims that the suspect claimed ownership of the DSS uniform and other materials found in his possession and identified his late brother as Monday Maiye.
According to the source, “investigators are also attempting to determine how long the suspect has been involved in similar acts of impersonation and extortion.”
According to information received, the suspect is still being held by DSS and is being questioned while detectives look into how he acquired the Service’s uniform and other tactical gear.
The arrest, according to the source, highlighted the Service’s rising worry over the actions of people who pose as security guards in order to threaten the public and carry out illegal activities.
The source continued, “The arrest highlights growing concerns by the Service over the activities of individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public and commit criminality.”
