Suspected kidnappers shot and killed Mr. Ossy, a branch manager of Polaris Bank, when he allegedly resisted an attack on the grounds of the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Imo State.

The Owerri-based banker was allegedly taking his kids to the university on Sunday nite when the event happened.

During the event, the gunmen are said to have kidnaped two female students.

According to sources, the gunmen confronted the late banker while he was on his way to drop off his children, who are FUTO students.

However, the bank claimed that the deceased was allegedly transporting his kids to the university when he was attacked by thugs in a statement signed by Rasheed Bolarinwa, Head, Brand Management & Corporate Communication.

The manager was not as lucky, according to the bank, but the kids were able to flee the scene.

“We are profoundly grieved by our Branch Manager’s untimely loss and offer our sincere sympathies to his loved ones, family, friends, and coworkers during this trying time.

While the kids were able to flee the area, he was not as fortunate in the regrettable episode that happened on Sunday when he was confronted by the thugs.

“We are aware that the relevant law enforcement agencies are looking into the matter, and we have faith that the incident’s circumstances will be fully determined.”

The bank said, “We respectfully ask the public to allow the authorities to finish their investigations, and our thoughts and prayers remain with the family of the deceased.”

A visitor was shot and killed on the university campus during the event, according to FUTO management.

The school said that two female pupils were also kidnaped in a statement signed by Registrar Chinonso Uba.

“The management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri is deeply saddened by the tragic security incident that occurred on the university campus on Sunday, September 6, 2026, during which a visitor to the university was fatally shot,” the statement said.

It is also stated that two female students were kidnaped during the incident. The relevant security agencies are presently investigating the situation, and management is interacting with the required authorities to ensure the students’ safe return.

“Students, faculty, parents, and the entire university community are reassured by management that everyone’s safety and security is still of utmost importance. Together with the appropriate security agencies, additional security measures are being put into place.

The university community is asked to maintain composure and alertness, refrain from needless movement, and report any suspicious conduct right once.

“More details will be given as needed.”

Due to the growing security concerns around the institution and its host communities, the FUTO management met with CP Audu Garba Bosso, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, on Monday.

Bosso promised the university administration at the meeting that security would be tightened around the campus and nearby towns, especially along the Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze, and Nekede axes.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the university’s reiteration of its prohibition on disorderly and rowdy gatherings following exams led to the cancelation of a planned nonviolent demonstration by certain students over the killing.

At its 495th and 501st sessions, which took place on August 31, 2023, and April 29, 2024, respectively, the FUTO Senate prohibited any kind of pointless celebration following exams, citing wanton destruction of university property, especially by graduating students.

At its seventh meeting, which took place on Monday, September 7, 2026, the university administration reiterated the ban and cautioned students against engaging in any activities that would disturb the tranquility of the campus and the host towns.

Rowdy behavior, public partying, disruptive conduct, littering, indiscriminate trash disposal, blocking or obstructing roadways and entrances, and destroying or defacing university property are all forbidden.

Additionally, the administration issued a warning against any actions that would jeopardize the security and safety of the campus community.

As at the time this article was filed, the police had not yet announced any arrests related to the murder and kidnapping.
