The Vise Chancellor of Federal University Oye Ekiti, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, who was the Chief Returning Officer for the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, was arrested and detained by the police in Abuja, according to what the administration of the institution has called false reports on some platforms.
The claims of arrests and detentions “are entirely false, baseless, and deliberately fabricated,” according to Dr. Sunday Saanu, Director of Communications and Public Affairs of FUOYE.
In a statement released in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, Saanu stated that “Prof Ogunwole has not been arrested, detained, or invited by the police or any other security agency in connection with his official duties as Returning Officer or for any other reason.”
To be clear, FUOYE’s substantive VC, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, fulfilled his duties as the Independent National Electoral Commission Returning Officer for the Osun State governorship election.
“In that capacity, after the process was completed, he declared Mr. Ademola Adeleke, the current governor, the winner of the election.”
The administration of the institution, which declared that “at no point has he (VC) been in the custody of any security agency,” advised the public to handle all unverified social media assertions with extreme caution and to completely ignore the bogus accusations.
It stated that Ogunwole departed Oye Ekiti on Monday for Abuja on official university business following the election, adding, “He traveled to the Federal Capital Territory to attend to critical administrative and institutional matters affecting the university.”
“It is quite unfortunate that some persons decided to disseminate false information with the intention of creating needless fear among Osun State residents, members of the university community, and the broader public.
The administration of the university vehemently denounces this careless spread of false information.
“The management assures all stakeholders that Prof. Ogunwole is still free, completely committed to his responsibilities as VC, and continues to work hard and nonstop to reposition FUOYE for higher academic excellence and institutional success.
“The university will continue to provide accurate information on matters affecting the institution and its leadership, as it remains committed to transparency.”
