The landlord of the flat where a 23-year-old nursing student from the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, was discovered dead in Uruezeani, Alor, in the state’s Idemili South Local Government Area, has been detained by the Anambra State Police Command.
Chiamaka Chilaka, an ND II student at the university and a resident of Isingu in the Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, was found dead on Sunday following a church service.
In a widely shared video on social media, a cleric was seen sobbing hysterically while lamenting the student’s passing and continuously yelling, “My daughter, my daughter.”
According to allegations in the film, the deceased’s landlord repeatedly made unwelcome overtures to her, which she allegedly turned down.
Additionally, it was claimed that she was last seen fighting with him.
Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the event in a statement on Thursday and stated that the landlord had been taken into custody while the investigation was being conducted.
Ikenga revealed that once the matter was moved from the Nnobi Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu ordered a thorough investigation.
He claimed that when police officers arrived at the scene, they saw obvious injuries on the deceased, such as a severe cut on her thigh, along with other signs of violence and bloodstains that would indicate foul play.
“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has instructed investigative officers to expedite action on the investigation into the reported suspected murder of a 23-year-old female student, whose lifeless body was discovered at her residence in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State,” the statement stated.
“After the case was transferred from the Nnobi Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for a thorough and covert investigation, the CP issued the directive.”
The body has been placed in a mortuary for examination and preservation, Ikenga continued.
“In the meantime, the property’s landlord has been arrested and is being questioned as part of ongoing investigations,” he continued.
Everyone was reassured by the police that a comprehensive investigation was in progress and that anyone found guilty would face justice.
In order to help the inquiry, he also asked the public to contribute helpful information.
