Authorities in Taiwan announced on Thursday that they had busted an illicit online betting ring and seized over $300 million in World Cup bets.

Although many people on the sports-mad island of Taiwan are football aficionados, the country did not make it to the World Cup.

According to a statement from the Fourth Precinct of the Taiwan City Police Department, police raided a home in the southern city of Taiwan on Wednesday.

According to the statement, they made eight arrests and confiscated cash, computers, cell phones, and ledgers.

For the World Cup betting operation, five of the eight individuals had come from Hong Kong and Macao on tourist visas.

According to investigators, the group allegedly made close to NT$10 billion ($313 million) from World Cup wagers.

The five-story home was hired by them for the duration of the competition.
