At its 72nd Annual Council Meeting, the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, elected Prof. Thomas Brima Rick Yormah as its 21st Chairman of Council.

The election was announced in a statement over the weekend by Demianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at the WAEC headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

During a week-long WAEC Council meeting in the Republic of Sierra Leone, Prof. Yormah—who had previously served as Prof. Ato Essuman’s deputy from the Republic of Ghana—was elected.

In his keynote speech, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone—represented by his vice, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh declared  the event open and offered congratulations to WAEC on reaching its 72nd anniversary.

He pointed out that throughout the previous 72 years, the council had been instrumental in the sub-region’s educational growth and had, in fact, acted as a catalyst for the evolution of educational reforms in the member nations.

Conrad Sackey, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, stated that the council has done a commendable job of upholding educational standards and promoting the development of good education since its founding in 1952.

He claimed that this has given the sub-region’s residents an understanding of the enormous potential that exists beyond examinations.

He commended WAEC for continuing to be relevant for more than 70 years and called on all interested parties to mobilize the council in order to end examination malpractice in public examinations across all member states.

In addition, three Ghanaian applicants received the WAEC International Excellence Award for their exceptional performance in the WASSCE for school candidates, 2023, at the same event.
