In order to address the security issues facing the area, the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has reiterated its support for the creation of state police.
Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the governor of Gombe State and the forum’s chairman, made this announcement during yesterday’s meeting in Abuja.
The governor of Gombe pointed out that localized, intelligence-driven measures were necessary to address contemporary security issues.
“We have consistently maintained that the nature and complexity of the security challenges we face require localized, intelligence-driven responses that only state policing can effectively provide,” he said.
Yahaya also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for collaborating with the National Assembly to draft the state police constitution.
The conference reaffirmed its support for the Northern nations Security Trust Fund, to which member nations committed to making monthly contributions of N1 billion.
However, Yahaya pointed out that state-by-state contributions have differed.
He commended the states of Nasarawa, Gombe, Borno, Kebbi, and Kaduna for fulfilling their responsibilities and urged others to follow suit.
“The effectiveness of this Fund depends on our collective commitment, consistency, and shared sense of urgency,” he said.
The meeting supported the Federal Government’s livestock transformation projects as a means of achieving long-term solutions to reduce the frequent conflicts between farmers and herders.
Additionally, the governors asked locals to back the administration’s initiatives to enhance development and security.
The forum urged Nigerians to assist the armed forces in what it called a “critical national assignment” and promised to continue supporting the Federal Government’s security agenda in a statement signed by Yahaya.
In addition to announcing its progress toward the creation of the New Nigeria Energy Company (NNEC), the forum decided to continue working with the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer to further the Sun Africa Project, a solar initiative that aims to increase the supply of electricity throughout the northern region.
According to the communiqué, “the forum is dedicated to ensuring that lasting peace and security are firmly established throughout the region and the entire country.”
The meeting was attended by governors Abdul Rahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Babagana Zulum (Borno), Mohammed Umaru Bago (Niger), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Kabir Yusuf (Kano), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Uba Sani (Kaduna), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Usman Ododo (Kogi), and Ahmad Aliyu (Sokoto).
