The Ogun State Police Command confirms the killing of a person in a violent cult-related altercation in Abeokuta on Sunday, which also reports that investigations have started to identify the perpetrators.

Detectives from the Oke Itoku Division reported that the incident happened at approximately 2:45 pm along Wasimi Ake Road, near the Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank axis leading towards Ijemo Agbadu, according to a statement released on Sunday by State command spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi.

The Command emphasized that there was no connection between the violence and any local political gatherings or public events.

The statement stated, “The Ogun State Police Command unequivocally clarifies that this incident did not occur at Ake Palace, did not take place within the venue of the rally, and is in no way connected to the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration program held at Ake Palace.”

According to preliminary police findings, locals were terrified after suspected rival cult groups engaged in a gunfight and fled into nearby streets.

Responding to distress calls, police officers reported seeing the aftermath of the altercation on the scene.

“Upon arrival, operatives found one victim, identified simply as “Stone,” lying in a pool of his blood with critical gunshot injuries,” the Command said in the statement.

The man was reportedly taken to the State Hospital in Ijaiye, Abeokuta, with the assistance of the State Ambulance Service, where medical staff declared him dead. Since then, his remains have been placed in the hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

Since then, normalcy has returned to the region, according to Babaseyi, and more security has been put in place to stop a recurrence.

The statement went on to say, “The Command has intensified the manhunt for the perpetrators and is actively pursuing credible leads to ensure their swift arrest and prosecution.”

While the Command invited the public to offer helpful information to support ongoing investigations, residents were asked to maintain composure while remaining watchful.
