Lawanson Abiodun, a 100-level student in the Department of Arts and Social Science Education at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago Iwoye, was reportedly shot and killed by armed robbers on Thursday, leaving the school in mourning.
The tragedy compelled the school administration to announce a lecture-free Thursday in order to grieve the student’s untimely death and offer condolences to the student body and the deceased’s family for the irreversible loss.
This was said in a statement signed by the university’s spokesperson, Niyi Oduwole, and released by the administration.
While expressing his sorrow over the student’s passing, the university’s vice chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, reassured the student body that the administration is working with the appropriate security agencies to further ensure the safety of people and property both inside and outside the building.
In part, the statement says, “The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, on behalf of the university senate, has directed that today, Thursday, June 18, 2026, be declared a lecture-free day following the incident of armed robbery in Ago-Iwoye township that resulted in the tragic loss of one of our students early this morning.”
“The university administration offers its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and assures the students that sufficient security measures will be implemented in cooperation with pertinent security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property, while also expressing sympathy to the entire student body over the death of their colleague.”
Additionally, management urges all students to show restraint and refrain from taking any action that would worsen the situation on the ground as they grieve the unexpected death of a colleague.
“The administration of the university promises to support the students during this crucial time and expresses sympathy for their lost colleague.”
Oluseyi Babaseyi, the state police command’s spokeswoman, verified the occurrence to our correspondent and stated that the command has opened an investigation into the illegal act.
“The police command has started an investigation into the tragic death of a student at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, who was shot by suspected armed robbers in Ago-Iwoye,” stated Babaseyi.
“Police officers have started a manhunt for the offenders after responding quickly. While the leadership offers condolences to the family and the OOU community and prays for the deceased’s spirit to rest in perfect peace, the investigation is still ongoing.
