During a midnight enforcement operation targeting criminal elements operating along the corridor, the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad apprehended suspected miscreants and hoodlums who were allegedly intimidating drivers along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway.
The most recent operation takes place months after roughly 25 people were detained in March on suspicion of harassing drivers along the same highway.
During an evening patrol, the suspects—dubbed “Omotaku”—were captured by law enforcement forces keeping an eye on activity along the area’s main thoroughfares.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the most recent arrests without revealing the precise number of suspects in a post shared on his X handle on Sunday. The post included a video of the suspects and stated that the operation was limited to those engaged in intimidating, harassing, and extorting drivers.
He said that among the suspects were those who allegedly vandalized cars when drivers refused to comply with their demands.
According to him, the squad will continue intelligence-driven operations against criminal groups whose actions endanger public safety and impede the free flow of people and automobiles throughout the state.
“Those who reportedly harass and intimidate drivers, demand money from them, and, in certain cases, damage cars when drivers refuse to comply with their demands were the objective of the operation.
He declared, “The RRS will continue to sustain intelligence-led operations and enforcement actions against criminal elements whose activities threaten public safety and disrupt the free movement of people and vehicles across the state.”
Security authorities in the state have taken numerous enforcement steps in response to allegations of drivers being harassed by alleged touts along the Lekki-Ajah route.
