As they are ready to start their season against Fulham on Monday, Morgan Rogers claims Chelsea is aiming for the top spot in the Premier League.
The Blues’ first encounter will take place at Craven Cottage, where Xabi Alonso will oversee his first competitive match as Chelsea manager. Rogers and other new players will be looking to make their competitive debuts.
According to Rogers, Chelsea’s goal was to compete at the top of the division, and the team was expected to live up to the expectations of its fans.
“Chelsea Football Club as a whole expects to compete with every team and be at the top of the league, and the supporters want to see their team perform to the level they expect.” In an interview posted on the club website, he stated, “That’s our aspiration and goal.”
The former Aston Villa player also said that it would take some time for Chelsea’s new team to get used to Alonso’s style of play, but he reiterated that they wanted to get off to a great start.
“We want to get started right away, but there’s a process, and as a new manager, it takes time to gel and fit perfectly,” Rogers stated. “We think we have the capacity and quality to.”
Along with Manchester City and Liverpool, Chelsea is one of several Premier League teams starting the season with new head coaches, and the campaign’s fate is still up in the air.
According to Rogers, part of what made the campaign thrilling was the mystery around how teams will approach the upcoming season.
“Exciting times are ahead,” Rogers remarked. “I share everyone else’s passion for the Premier League. Even though I play in it, I still enjoy it when I’m not. I therefore want as much thrill as I can.
It’s fascinating because nobody can predict how each team will set up or how each player will perform. This is the reason we enjoy the sport and watch the game.
“And hopefully, we’re at the top of the table, where we want to be, in the exciting part of it.”
As Chelsea gets ready for their first game, Rogers said he has also been trying to get along with his new teammates and learn what Alonso expects of him.
“It’s about staying focused and understanding it’s a journey,” he said in closing. Even if things might not always go as planned, if we have the correct attitude and perspective, we will be where we need to be as a team and as a club.
