Nasiru Marafa, the bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria, was reportedly shot and killed in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State.

Oladipo Ajayi, the university’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, signed an official notice on Sunday disclosing this.

According to Ajayi, Marafa was allegedly shot on the way back from Gusau, but the university did not elaborate on the specifics of the incident.

When the university announced the bursar’s passing, it said, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.”

“The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, Staff, and Students of the National Open University of Nigeria, regrets to announce the sudden and untimely passing of the University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, which occurred today, Sunday, September 6th, 2026,” the statement said.

According to the university, Marafa was a “dedicated and committed staff member” who held a number of positions of responsibility throughout his career and served the organization honorably.

He was named Bursar of NOUN in September 2022, according to the statement, and took on the role with “a strong sense of duty and commitment to the advancement of the University.”

“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator, and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement continued.

The organization sent its sympathies to his close friends, family, coworkers, and anyone else who was grieving his passing.

According to the statement, more specifics on the funeral plans will be shared as the family releases them.

The institution prayed that Allah would grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, pardon his transgressions, and give his friends, family, coworkers, and the entire university community the fortitude to endure the loss.

Abubakar Yazid, the public relations officer for the Zamfara State Police, was not approachable at the time this story was filed, thus attempts to gain his response were unsuccessful.

In June, it was reported that after armed robbers allegedly shot and killed a 100-level student in the Department of Arts and Social Science Education at Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ago Iwoye, the school was engulfed in grief and sorrow.

The tragedy compelled the school administration to announce a day without lectures in order to grieve the student’s untimely death and offer condolences to the student body and the deceased’s family for the irreversible loss.
