During a Good Friday drama rehearsal in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, Cross River State, an actor named Michael Obeten was struck by a malfunctioning cannon, resulting in his death.
It was discovered on Monday that Obeten, who had previously portrayed Jesus Christ in earlier iterations of the “Passion Play,” was renportedly mentoring younger performers at the time of the terrible event.
A locally manufactured cannon known as “oginigbo,” which is intended to mimic thunder effects, is said to have malfunctioned and struck him in the head at Station 12 of the rehearsal.
In a statement signed by one Lesoda-Ada, the University of Cross Rivers’ 2007 Mass Communication Alumni Group claimed that unlicensed personnel handled the equipment, according to CrossRiverWatch on Wednesday.
According to the statement, “Obeten suffered severe brain injuries after being struck in the head by flying debris from the blast.”
Obeten was taken to the hospital and given an emergency surgery appointment, but he eventually passed away from his wounds.
Calls for more stringent safety rules at public gatherings have been triggered by the occurrence. “Mike Obeten was more than a classmate,” the alumni organization added, calling his passing “tragic and avoidable.” He was a friend to many, a leader, and a unifying force. It was completely avoidable for him to die.
They demanded a thorough investigation, the prosecution of those involved, and a prohibition on the use of rifles and cannons at public events unless they are handled by qualified experts.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Akata, confirmed the event to our correspondent via WhatsApp, stating that it had been reported but that no formal complaint had been filed at the Yakurr Division.
