A suspected informant who was allegedly providing information to bandits operating in the Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State’s Romo community has been detained by security personnel.
According to reports, Ashiru Abubakar, a resident of Gumfa Gebe village in Wamakko Local Government Area, was collaborating with criminal elements in Tambuwal.
Residents of Romo were allegedly given an ultimatum to pay N10 million or face an attack, and Abubakar was apparently connected to this threat.
Residents of Tambuwal and nearby areas have condemned recent attacks and kidnappings, raising additional security worries at the time of the arrest.
DSP Ahmed Rufai, the public relations officer for the Sokoto State Police, confirmed the arrest on Wednesday and informed our correspondent that the suspect had been charged.
According to Rufai, the arrest came after enquiries into Abubakar’s purported actions and connections to criminal elements.
He went on to say that the command would keep taking action against anyone suspected of supporting illegal activity in the state.
In order to stop future assaults and make it easier for displaced people to return, residents of the impacted areas have demanded more security presence and better intelligence-led operations.
