Following an altercation with a referee following Al-Ahly’s 1-1 draw with Ceramica Cleopatra in the Egyptian Pro League, keeper Mohamed El-Shenawy of Egypt was fined and given a four-match suspension.
El-Shenawy, who was on the bench for the game, reacted strongly to a late ruling that denied Al-Ahly a penalty for a suspected handball during stoppage time, which led to the disciplinary action.
After the final whistle, the situation worsened and an argument with a match official resulted.
“A four-match ban and fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds (£700) for assaulting the referee by pushing or pulling (use of the hand without violence),” the Egyptian Pro League said in an official statement on Friday.
El-Shenawy will miss four league games due to the suspension, and it is anticipated that he won’t be able to play until the season’s Championship round, when the top seven clubs compete for the championship.
Egypt’s first-choice custodian at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the 37-year-old is a vital member of the national team for the forthcoming World Cup in North America.
Al Ahly SC, his team, is presently five points behind leaders Zamalek SC in the play-off standings with 41 points after one game.
The decision is made at a pivotal point in the season, when Al-Ahly is still vying for the championship in a fiercely contested league crown.
