In order to become the most expensive Japanese goalie in history, Zion Suzuki had to overcome costly errors and racist taunts.

When the 23-year-old completes his transfer from Italian team Parma to Aston Villa for up to 35 million euros ($40 million), he will become the first Japanese goalie to play in the Premier League.

According to The Athletic, he is expected to sign a five-year contract, and Emiliano Martinez, the current Villa number one, may depart.

Born in New Jersey to a Japanese mother and a Ghanaian father, Suzuki relocated to Japan at an early age. He was previously connected to Manchester United.

He first played football in Japan before moving to Belgium and subsequently Italy, where he has already earned 28 caps.

Before Villa called, Suzuki seemed destined to sign with Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, but he thinks he has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

Before the World Cup, where he was crucial to Japan’s run to the round of 32, Suzuki told FIFA’s website, “Of course big saves are important but above all, I want to become a goalkeeper who brings stability to the team.”

“Doing the basic tasks correctly on a regular basis. playing with the will to resist giving up.

After just a few games for his club, Suzuki made his international debut after rising through the ranks at J. League team Urawa Reds.

Despite rumored interest from United, he transferred to the Belgian team Sint-Truiden in 2023, citing his desire to gain more experience as a top option.

In January 2024, he was given Japan’s starting jersey for the Asian Cup, but before they were defeated in the quarterfinals, he put on a string of poor performances.

Following a group-stage loss to Iraq, the young stopper experienced racial abuse online.

Regarding the mistreatment, Suzuki declared, “I’m not about to let it beat me.” I wish to retaliate against them by achieving successful outcomes.

After the Asian Cup, Suzuki remained Japan’s top player and steadily increased his stature.

In order to become the first Japanese goalie to play in Serie A in Italy, he relocated to Parma in 2024.

His powerful 6-foot-3-inch build earned him the nickname “animale” from his teammates.

Suzuki recovered in time for this summer’s World Cup after breaking his hand in late 2025, and he performed admirably as Japan advanced from a group that also contained the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden.

In the round of 32, he once again showed promise against Brazil, but he was unable to save his team from losing 2-1 as Gabriel Martinelli scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute.

After Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi’s brief tenure with second-tier Portsmouth in the early 2000s, he will become the second Japanese goalie to play in English professional football with his impending transfer to Villa.

Suzuki, who speaks English but whose first language is Japanese, claims he learned from his early mistakes.

“I made a lot of mistakes at first and demonstrated my inexperience as Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper,” he said on FIFA’s website.

“I think my mindset will help the team feel more stable now.”

Suzuki stated that he wanted to be the greatest goalkeeper in the world as his stature in Serie A developed.

He declared, “I want to be the best as an individual and as a team, winning titles like the Champions League and World Cup.”
