ThankGod Omori, often known as TG Omori, a Nigerian music video director, has talked candidly about the cost of treating renal failure, stating that even a N1 million monthly wage might not be sufficient to maintain dialysis therapy.
Omori discussed his experience with kidney failure and the difficulties he encountered while waiting for a transplant in an interview with the Afropolitan podcast that was posted on YouTube on Wednesday.
The director of the song video stated that while he paid between N150,000 and N200,000 at a private facility, a dialysis session at some hospitals costs between N50,000 and N70,000.
He claims that patients would need up to three dialysis sessions each week, which would result in a weekly cost of between N500,000 and N600,000.
“My surgery cost a lot of money. Dialysis costs ₦70k each day, although I occasionally had three sessions per week at an upscale facility, which cost ₦500k. A worker on minimal pay wouldn’t be able to make ends meet. I had to wait a year for a ₦31 million transplant.
“So, in just one session, a minimum-wage worker is already dead,” Omori remarked.
He calculated that, disregarding the cost of further testing, medication, and other problems, a patient on dialysis for almost a year while awaiting a transplant may spend up to N31 million.
Omori also described his failed attempt to get a kidney from his brother, stating that it took nine months to find a donor before medical professionals realised the kidney was incompatible with his body.
After searching for a donor for nine months, my brother donated his kidney to me. According to the doctor, it didn’t match and my body wasn’t accepting it.
The physician made another attempt, but it remained unresponsive. They stated they would have to take me back to see how they could get my body to accept it, which infuriated me. “My brother still only has one kidney,” he remarked.
Omori stated that even making N1 million a month would not be enough to pay for the treatment’s financial requirements.
“Therefore, it cannot serve you if your monthly salary is even one million naira,” he stated.
He claimed that the encounter also altered his viewpoint on the importance of money and financial assistance amid life-threatening sickness.
Omori stated, “Money can buy some time even though it can’t buy happiness.”
Remember that TG Omori disclosed in 2024 that he had received a kidney transplant, claiming that his only brother’s kidney donation was the only reason he was still alive.
Omori posted a picture of himself getting medical attention in the hospital with the phrase, “Keep my spirit alive,” to further validate the development.
