After assisting the national team in winning the championship, Spain defender Marc Cucurella honored World Cup-winning coach Luis de la Fuente by getting a tattoo of the boss.
De la Fuente led Spain to their most recent international victory, and Cucurella was a member of the side that defeated Argentina 1-0 in this month’s World Cup final.
The tattoo was made public on social media by the Real Madrid defender, who paid £52 million to join the team from Chelsea in June.
Alongside the number 26 is a photo of De la Fuente clutching the World Cup trophy.
“Promise kept,” Cucurella stated while posting pictures and videos of the tattoo being finished, as reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday.
De la Fuente quipped after the final that he anticipated Cucurella to honor his pledge to receive the tribute after Spain’s victory.
“I’ve already asked them if they made a mistake.” De la Fuente stated at his press conference following the game.
They will enjoy it, but they did. They won’t have to put it somewhere no one can see it because I’m not that ugly. However, it makes me giggle, and I’m glad they honor their commitments.
During the competition, Cucurella was one of Spain’s most important players and gained recognition for both his performances and his demeanor off the field.
Throughout the World Cup, the defender carried his wife’s pyjama top as a lucky charm. He previously revealed that his characteristic long, curly hair makes it easy for his youngster to recognize him during games.
His friendship with the coach who guided the team to victory and Spain’s World Cup victory will now be permanently commemorated with the new tattoo.
