The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission has set Saturday, November 14, 2026, as the revised date for the rescheduled local government council elections in the 27 local government areas of the state.
The announcement was included in a press release authorized by the Commission’s Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, after discussions with key stakeholders, such as the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and registered political parties, on Tuesday in Owerri.
The commission stated that the decision came after a weekend meeting with stakeholders, where attendees collectively pressed ISIEC to declare a new election date promptly.
The election was originally set for September 26, 2026, but was delayed after certain members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council contacted the judiciary to request a prolongation of the electoral schedule.
ISIEC later moved the election to November 7 but delayed it again on October 31 after discussions with political parties and other stakeholders, without providing a new date during that time.
The commission indicated that the previously suggested date of November 7, 2026, was deemed impractical, prompting the adjustment of the event to November 14.
The announcement stated, “The elections will yield 27 Local Government Council Chairpersons and 305 Councillors throughout the state.”
“ISIEC has thus instructed the leaders of all registered political parties to come to its headquarters to obtain the official election schedule and guidelines.”
The commission also announced its willingness to monitor the primary elections of political parties for chairmanship and councillorship candidates in line with the relevant electoral laws.
“Reiterating its dedication to carrying out peaceful, transparent, free, and credible elections, ISIEC assured political parties, candidates, and voters of an equitable environment that would ensure the rise of democratically elected governments at the local level.”
“The commission further requested the support and collaboration of all parties involved for the successful execution of the council elections on November 14.”
