In opposition to the recent rise in school fees, the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Students’ Union Government has instructed students to participate in a nonviolent sit-at-home protest on Monday (today).

The union said in a statement released on Sunday that the instruction came after fruitless discussions about the reviewed fees with the institution’s management.

The statement, which was signed by Afolabi Temitope, the president of the Students’ Union, Olorode Kehinde, the acting speaker, Ekundayo Gbenga, the general secretary, and Oloyede Ganiyu, the public relations officer, stated that the union had consulted with management on several occasions since the updated fees were posted on the students’ portal.

The organization claims that it has continuously insisted that every choice pertaining to students’ academic endeavors must prioritize their welfare and interests.

“The issues raised by students have not been addressed despite our persistent efforts and multiple rounds of discussion. The Students’ Union believes that many students and parents find it increasingly difficult to bear additional financial burdens due to the current economic realities,” the statement stated.

It further stated that it could not disregard their concerns while continuing to be dedicated to responsible leadership, constructive involvement, and nonviolent campaigning as the constitutionally recognized voice of students.

As a result, the union ordered all students to stay at home on Monday and abstain from all academic activity, including lectures.

“As a result, the Students’ Union Government hereby directs all MAPOLY students to observe a peaceful sit-at-home on Monday, August 3, 2026, as a demonstration of our collective dissatisfaction with the recent increase in school fees and a call for further reconsideration by the appropriate authorities,” the statement read.

The union emphasized that the action was a nonviolent way for students to voice their concerns and was not an invitation to violence, property destruction, intimidation, or any other behavior that could jeopardize the institution’s reputation and tranquility.

Additionally, it asked students to uphold discipline, peace, and order, to avoid conflict with staff, security, and other students, and to only depend on information that has been formally issued by the Students’ Union Government.

In support of the demonstration, the union also urged tricycle operators, shuttle drivers, commercial drivers, and other transportation service providers in the polytechnic community to halt operations on and around campus.

The union stated that the demonstration should not be seen as the conclusion of talks, although it did reiterate its commitment to communication with the institution’s management.

“This directive does not mean that communication with management has ended. Instead, it is evidence that the concerns of MAPOLY students as a whole cannot be disregarded while communication is ongoing, the statement continued.

The union promised to keep seeking constructive engagement with the management and expressed optimism that the nonviolent protest would persuade the authorities to reevaluate the fee hike in the interest of students.
