Daniel Adegboyega, a Nigerian basketball player living in the United States, was charged with first-degree rape by forced coercion in Alabama after police claimed he had sexually assaulted a lady in his apartment.
The Jacksonville Police Department detained the 21-year-old at his Jacksonville, Alabama, apartment in July, according to a report published by WVTM 13 on Monday.
Adegboyega is being detained in the Calhoun County Jail without bond after just joining the men’s basketball team at Jacksonville State University ahead of the next season.
According to court documents, he was placed under immigration hold by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the report.
The accused victim went to Adegboyega’s flat on July 28 to watch a movie, investigators informed the court.
According to the article, she allegedly texted her roommate in secret during the visit after Adegboyega made unwanted sexual approaches.
Adegboyega allegedly used the woman’s phone to answer one of the roommate’s calls after multiple unanswered calls and texts, claiming to be in the restroom.
The roommate called the Jacksonville Police Department to ask for a welfare check because she was worried about her safety.
The woman was allegedly in obvious discomfort when the officers arrived at the flat at around two in the morning.
Adegboyega and the purported victim both gave testimonies to the police, who also gathered evidence, including the woman’s purportedly bloodstained pants.
According to the complaint, Adegboyega denied using force when the woman said he had sexually assaulted her twice that evening.
According to reports, he was arrested that evening and is still being held at the Calhoun County Jail.
Adegboyega entered the country on an F-1 student visa that ended in 2023, according to testimony given by ICE agent Ty Unruh at a bond hearing.
According to the article, Unruh stated that Adegboyega would be moved to an immigration detention facility in Louisiana to start immigration processes that would result in his deportation to Nigeria if he is granted bond.
Ryan Parlee, Adegboyega’s host father, contested the immigration testimony, calling it false.
Parlee stated in the report that Adegboyega completed four years of high school in Iowa and graduated in 2022 without going back to Nigeria.
He said that Adegboyega’s transfer from the University of South Florida to UC Riverside exacerbated the immigration problems, which were caused by a family vacation to Mexico in 2022.
Parlee further claimed that Adegboyega’s visa expired because UC Riverside neglected to submit the necessary immigration paperwork prior to his transfer to Jacksonville State University this summer.
Adegboyega has entered a not guilty plea to the accusation.
