A deadly traffic accident at Ogere Junction on the Ijebu Ode-Benin expressway early Thursday resulted in two fatalities, while two individuals emerged unscathed.
The incident took place in the early morning of Thursday, at approximately 5:10am, involving a white Mack truck with the registration ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus with an unidentified registration number.
Afolabi Odunsi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, revealed this in a statement provided to reporters on Thursday.
Odunsi stated that a total of four adult males were involved in the accident; unfortunately, two individuals lost their lives, while two others were unharmed.
He stated, “Initial investigation suggests that the likely reasons for the accident were route violation (RTV) and speed violation (SPV). The collision caused the Peugeot J5 bus to ignite, resulting in the front part being entirely consumed by flames.
“FRSC rescue teams reached the location within two minutes of the alert and promptly began managing the traffic.” The impacted lane was shifted to the alternate roadway to facilitate vehicle circulation while work persisted to clear the debris and reinstate the smooth flow of traffic.
“The bodies of the deceased victims were removed by the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD), Ogbere Division, and taken to the mortuary.”
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, has conveyed his sympathies to the families of the victims and emphasized the importance of motorists adhering to traffic laws at all times.
Ogunjobi cautioned motorists about the dangers of speeding and ignoring traffic rules, particularly in low visibility and on slippery roads, highlighting that these risky driving practices are significant contributors to deadly accidents on Nigeria’s roads.
He emphasized the sector command’s dedication to maintaining safer roads by means of continuous enforcement, public awareness, and timely rescue efforts. Drivers are urged to operate their vehicles responsibly, adhere to safe speed limits, and verify that their cars are in good condition prior to starting any trip.
On Tuesday, Odunsi revealed that more than 161 individuals lost their lives in 415 traffic accidents throughout the state from January to May 2026.
He stated that during the reviewed period, 1,007 individuals suffered different levels of injuries in the accidents.
